As a Certified Debtor Advocate, I agree:

  1. To respect the unique worth and inherent dignity of all Debtors and uphold their rights, including their right to self-determination and making choices for themselves freely.

  2. To use my expertise, knowledge and skills in fair and responsible ways to serve the needs of Debtors and promote the financial well-being of individuals and families.

  3. To challenge injustices, especially injustices that affect vulnerable and disadvantaged Debtors.

  4. To encourage financial education and promote the Debtor’s pursuit of their individual goals.

  5. To value openness and transparency in my professional practice and avoid relationships where my integrity may be compromised, ensuring that should a conflict of interest be unavoidable, the nature of the conflict is fully disclosed to the Debtor.

  6. To demonstrate integrity and display the qualities of honesty, truthfulness, reliability and diligence in my professional capacity.

  7. To respect the importance of the trust and confidence placed in my professional relationships with Debtors and to adhere to the absolute obligation to safeguard Debtor trust.

  8. To respect the Debtor’s right to confidentiality of the information shared with me and only disclose confidential information with the informed consent of the Debtor.

  9. To commit to investing in my level of expertise so that my ability to serve Debtors continuously improves to the highest degree of quality possible.

  10. To contribute to the ongoing development of my profession by participating in the advancement of new and emerging professional knowledge and skills.

  11. To promote respect for my profession’s values and principles in organizations where I work or with which I have a professional affiliation.

  12. To trust ethical, truthful, responsible and transparent consumer credit, collection and insolvency industry practices and explicitly reject practices and ideologies that do not meet these conditions.

  13. To not engage in any harassment, humiliation, false claims or other disrespectful behaviour.

  14. To adhere to the spirit as well as the letter of all applicable laws and regulations.

  15. To bring credit to my profession through my public demeanor and repudiate involvement in any activities or practices that bring discredit.

  16. To avoid even the appearance of any criminal offense or professional misconduct.

  17. To encourage my colleagues to embrace and practice CDA’s Ethical Standards and Principles of Conduct.

  18. To contribute to the improvement of government legislation and government regulations that could have an impact on Debtors, the industry or my profession at-large.

  19. To support CDA in its efforts to advance industry improvements and promote CDA’s role to advocate as the collective voice of the Debtor.

  20. To advise CDA of anyone who may have committed an act in contravention of CDA’s Code of Ethical Standards and Principles of Conduct.
